I have all my private files (apart from music and digital photos) in a CVS repository that I check out on at least three different computers, and have done this successfully for a number of years. I don't see any obvious side effects. It also gives me a single coherent place to backup which is also nice. Actually, since I regularly update all checked-out copies, any one of those copies would work rather well as a backup as well even if the master repository was lost. I almost never use the revision history anyway.

As for music and photos, I sync them with unison to my work station from home.
